Where in the script do I sign up for them?

In admin I see them, but don't see what they do.
When I'm on as a test user I don't see groups anywhere?

In the upper menu: Groups |

There is no groups on the upper menu, or friends either.
I just loaded the script two months ago. I guess I'll put in a ticket.
